When I’m in my 70s, if I’m anything like this grandpa… I’d be OK with that.

Dirty Grandpa stars Robert De Niro (Goodfellas, The Godfather 2), Zac Efron (Neighbors, 17 Again), Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Safety Not Guaranteed) and is directed by Dan Mazer.

Jason Kelly (Efron) is about to get married until his grandfather (De Niro), tricks him into driving to Florida for spring break.

I saw the trailers for this film, I knew what I was getting into, I’ve read all the bad reviews and this film still sucks. It’s not horrible, there’s some merit to it but for the most part it’s embarrassing. There is some talent involved in this film but also some really bad writing.

I’m a fan of Zac Efron as an actor. He was great in the lead role in Me and Orson Welles and in Neighbors last year, he proved he has some comedic chops. Now in Dirty Grandpa he proves again, that he can be funny. He had great chemistry with De Niro and his comedic timing is pretty good. I think he has a bright future, he just needs to get the right roles and pick better films to be in.

De Niro is my favorite actor of all time and I thought he was great in this film. He’s only done about 2 good films in the last 10 years (Dirty Grandpa is not one of them) but at least he seemed to be enjoying himself making this one, De Niro was having fun and that translated through the performance. His character is very funny and the few times I did laugh, mostly came from him.

If you’re easily offended, you should probably stay away from Dirty Grandpa, they go all out with every possible insulting joke. When you do that, it’s very hard to hit every joke. Sometimes they go for something and it’s funny but sometimes a joke missing and it becomes very awkward. There were several times a joke kept going and going but was never funny, the final scene is something they were building up for the whole film and when they finally get to it, it’s horrible and won’t end. The direct has worked with Sacha Baron Cohen on his films and it shows. The humor in this film is similar to Borat but without any real craftsmanship, none of the jokes are remotely clever and the scenes feel forced to get to a punchline.

The side character are unbearable. Aubrey Plaza is hit or miss when it comes to comedies and this was a huge miss for her. She’s really annoying and not one of her jokes were funny. There’s a drug dealer who keeps coming back into the story and every time he was on screen I cringed at how bad he was. Zac Efron’s cousin in the film is unnecessarily obnoxious and not a fun character to watch. I enjoyed the two leads but this film is full of bad supporting characters, who are either cliched stereotypes or just really horrible people, spewing terribly written jokes.

If you’ve ever seen a road trip film, then you’ve seen this film and probably seen it done much better. After the initial setup, about 10 minutes in, you know exactly how the film is going to play out and your be right, every step of the way. No effort was put into this script, to make it even slightly interesting or original, so I don’t know why anyone should put any effort into watching this pointless piece of crap.

Dirty Grandpa is not worth your time and should be avoid at all cost. De Niro is enjoyable but if you want to see a good De Niro performance, there’s been plenty of them in the past. Majority of the time the humor misses and most of the characters are dreadful.
