Tonight the SAG Awards were given out and other than two surprises, the film results were predictable. The show itself was enjoyable, I like that it’s quick, the nominations are read, the actors come out, give their political speech and they’re gone again. Speech of the night by far goes to David Harbour, that shit was awesome!
So lets take a look at the winners.
Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Captain America: Civil War
Winner – Hacksaw Ridge
Hacksaw Ridge won here and I can’t really complain, despite the fact I would have voted for Captain America. The stunts in Hacksaw Ridge were incredible and I’m just happy it won for something.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Winner – Viola Davis – Fences
Naomie Harris – Moonlight
Nicole Kidman – Lion
Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea
As predicted, Viola Davis took the award and she couldn’t be more deserving. Davis’ performance was so powerful and although her competition in this category was tough, there was no way she wasn’t winning tonight.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Winner – Mahershala Ali – Moonlight
Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water
Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins
Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea
Dev Patel – Lion
Another predictable result. Personally, I didn’t think Ali deserved to win, not that he wasn’t great in Moonlight, I just don’t think he did enough in the film. I thought there were other actors in Moonlight, you could have nominated for this category that gave better performances. Honestly, I would have given the award to either of the other four over Ali.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Amy Adams – Arrival
Emily Blunt – The Girl on the Train
Natalie Portman – Jackie
Winner – Emma Stone – La La Land
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins
Again, everyone knew Emma Stone was winning and as someone who loves La La Land, I had no problem with that. This was a career best for Stone (and she’s had some good roles) and for the ‘audition’ scene alone, she deserved this award. She won tonight and now she’s going to the Oscars in February, to win there too.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling – La La Land
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
Winner – Denzel Washington – Fences
This is where The SAG Awards started to throw out some surprises. I thought Casey Affleck was definitely going to win and if not Andrew Garfield. Not that Denzel didn’t give an excellent performance but I thought he was 3rd maybe 4th in this list of nominees. This was a stacked category from top to bottom, so I wouldn’t have been upset with either of the five men winning, just surprised it went to Denzel. This now probably changes a lot of people’s predictions for the Oscars.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Winner – Hidden Figures
Manchester by the Sea
Similar to the previous category, I didn’t expect Hidden Figures to win, it was in 3rd place in my opinion but I can’t argue it didn’t deserve to win. Everyone was excellent in Hidden Figures, the film was important and if it means more people will watch and learn about this story, it’s only a good thing.
Overall I liked the SAG Awards, there wasn’t any decisions I would call ‘wrong’ and the show moves along at a nice pace.
What did you think about the SAG Awards and the winners?
